You have probably seen, and read, a lot about these problems. Lots of famous people have said they have an eating problem. There are various types:-Overweight, either healthy psychologically, or not (worrying constantly about things Underweight (anorexia), a fear of fatness, and constant dieting and exercise Bulimia (normal weight, or combined with anorexia), overeating and then vomiting Eating disorders happen for many reasons, some are:-To cope with poor self esteem and lack of confidence (successful dieter, but thinks unsuccesful at everything else) To prevent becoming an adult (severe anorexia) As part of some other illness (depression usually) Associated with high achievement (sports people, ballet dancers, athletes) Associated with childhood abuse, physical and sexual abuse Mild eating disorders are quite common, severe are less so, and can be life threatening, if you have a severe form, you may not admit this, to yourself or anyone. |

The first step to recognise you have a problem, this is often the biggest hurdle to recovery, login-in for self assessment You may then wish to try various types of help:-Self-help (regular meals, stopping dieting, exercising, vomiting) Self-help (reading, support groups, changing your lifestyle) Medication, (especially for severe bulimia, or if very depressed) Therapy, (most people start with cognitive behavioural type) Admission to hospital More therapy (long term types, psychotherapy, exploring childhood sometimes) Most people with severe problems need lots of support from friends, and family, many need professional help. Finding the right sort of help can take some years, its important to find a professional you can trust, but who will be firm with you about your eating behaviours. |
